B&B DOORS AND WINDOWS, INC. FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS – IMPORTANT!
Thank you. You’ve chosen a quality-crafted, solid wood B&B Doors and Windows, Inc. product. We use only top-quality materials that provide the eye appeal and long-lasting function you want in a door or window. We manufacture with hand-crafted care and want to ensure that you get and preserve all the value we have built into your B&B Doors and Windows, Inc. solid wood product. Therefore, it is important that you carefully follow these handling and finishing instructions.
PLEASE READ AND COMPLY WITH ALL OF THESE HANDLING AND FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS TO PROTECT YOUR WARRANTY.
1. Immediately after delivery, inspect for defects or damage.
DO NOT FINISH OR INSTALL PRODUCTS WITH NOTICEABLE DEFECTS OR DAMAGE. NOTIFY DEALER IMMEDIATELY.
2. Finishing must be completed WITHIN 10 DAYS of purchase, and before any assembly of the product. If storage is necessary before final installation, finish products according to these instructions prior to storage. Store in a dry, protected area. Avoid direct sunlight or exposure to abnormally high humidity/heat.
3. Finishing preparation: Some disassembly is recommended on products shipped assembled: remove locks, wheels, and screen inserts so that all wood surfaces are finished. It is important to fill and sand all staple and/or nail holes prior to applying any paint or stain. On all glazed products, carefully remove all excess glazing putty (see figure 3 ) and clean the glass before finishing. Avoid scratching glass with metal scrapers or razor blades. Carefully hold a new razor blade or putty knife along the molding details that hold the glass in place. Keeping the edge towards the glass facing inward to separate the glazing putty from the wood. Pull the blade parallel with the molding. This will enable you to lift the putty in long lengths. AVOID SCRATCHING GLASS: prior to shipment, glass is carefully inspected for defects. Warranty does not apply to glass that was scratched after initial delivery. Care must be taken so that the glass is not scratched or damaged in any way during handling, masking, or finishing. 4. PAINT OR STAIN all exposed wood surfaces, including wheel cavities and lock pockets. (In most cases, that’s six surfaces, including the four edges at the top, bottom, and sides, plus front and back faces. See Figure 1. FAILURE TO FINISH ALL SIX SIDES VOIDS THE WARRANTY. On product components built in (such as fixed window panels) where the edges are permanently glued or fastened and are not exposed, you only need to finish the exposed front and back. Lap paint or stain onto the glass on the exterior side to seal out moisture (see Figure 2). Failure to finish any B & B Doors and Windows, Inc. product WITHIN 10 DAYS after purchase VOIDS THE WARRANTY.
A. IF YOU ARE GOING TO PAINT: Use a high-quality oil-based or water-based primer coat. Refer to the paint manufacturer’s instructions. First, prime the product on all six sides of all components that are not permanently installed at the factory. The primer must then be sanded and scuffed prior to painting. Apply two compatible oil or water-based finish coats of paint (again to all six exposed sides or front and back sides of permanently installed panels) of each item. While painting, you must lap onto the glass to seal out the moisture. (See Figure 2).
B. IF YOU ARE GOING TO STAIN: Use a sanding sealer for the first coat on all six sides of all components that are not permanently installed at the factory. Following the procedures in step 3. Sanding sealer is to assist in the staining process by allowing the stain to color the wood more evenly. Sand lightly between coats. NOTE: SANDING SEALER IS NOT CONSIDERED A SEAL. IF ANY B&B DOORS AND WINDOWS, INC. PRODUCT IS NOT TOP COATED WITHIN 10 DAYS, THE WARRANTY WILL BE VOID. Apply stain to all six surfaces following the stain manufacturer’s instructions (we recommend an oil-based stain). Do not use a lacquer-based toner or top coat. Before applying the top coat, follow the paint manufacturer’s drying time of the stain used for proper top coat bond. Then, apply three or more coats of a clear waterproof finish to preserve the product, again, sanding lightly between coats. Clear top coats may be oil- or water-based exterior finishes (we recommend using an exterior polyurethane or spar varnish for use with top coats). That is a high-grade ultraviolet-resistant finish. The higher the sheen, the better the protection the top coat will provide and the longer the time between refinishing. If no sealing top coat is applied over the stain or sanding sealer, the product will weather very rapidly, and product failure may occur. When applying sealer coats, you must lap onto the glass on the weather-exposed side to seal out the moisture. (See Figure 2).
5. CLEANING GLASS AFTER FINAL FINISHING: Be certain that when cleaning the glass, you do not cut into or remove the area of paint or sealer that laps onto it. The paint is a sealer and must protect both wood and putty surfaces from moisture.
6. B&B Doors and Windows, Inc. does not warrant the performance of any finish material. Refinishing must be done at appropriate intervals throughout the installation.
DO NOT FINISH OR INSTALL PRODUCTS WITH NOTICEABLE DEFECTS OR DAMAGE. NOTIFY DEALER IMMEDIATELY.
